Brandy barrel 450 l - 500 l - Germany
Used brandy barrel from the French Limousin oak These barrels were filled with French brandy distillate at the distillery in Wilthen. Since 1885, the Wilthen distillery has been producing brandy according to the French model. It is one of the first and therefore oldest brandy distilleries in Germany. Not only did it survive both World Wars and the GDR, it has also produced one or the other big name over the years - both Hugo Asbach and his son completed their training with Wilthen. The generic term "brandy", which was registered with the Imperial Patent Office in 1907, is a joint development of the Association of German Cognac Distilleries, to which the companies of Hugo Asbach and Hünlichs also belonged. The Wilthen distillery was family-owned from 1842 to 1951. After expropriation and renaming to "VEB Weinbrand" - one of the leading companies in the GDR, it was then taken over in 1992 by the Count von Hardenberg family due to lack of heirs, but who appreciate tradition and history. This is how today's Hardenberg-Wilthen AG was founded. By default, the barrels are equipped with a used wooden or plastic bung. If you want a new silicone bung, you can order it under accessories (type standard - C16). Used wooden barrels: Notches in the wood or, in certain circumstances, an uneven base, do not constitute a quality defect, but stem from the idiosyncrasies of the production method and the prior use of the barrels. The usage of the barrel will not be affected by those! The barrels are very carefully checked by us at the exit control against sensor and technical errors. We assume no liability for cracks or splits that occur during maturation. A possible and a reasonable repair is not under guarantee. Pictures are examples, colour variations are possible

Pictures are examples, colour variations are possible   Is Brandy only the number 2? I mean no, distillates especially matured in barrels of American or French oak, which have experienced a first occupation of sherry, I find great. Carefully matured in the Solera process or, in the case of large and valuable qualities, over years sometimes even decades in a barrel, one experiences true fireworks of flavor aromas and celebrations for the palate. Typical of the brandies from Spain and Portugal, from whose distillers we obtain our brandy barrels, is the taste of aromas such as plum, raisin, caramel and positively occupied by mahogany wood, to experience.  Brandy is somewhat easier and more accessible to enjoy as Cognac, certainly also conditioned as already mentioned by the storage in American oak barrels, which by nature already give a very large vanillin share to the distillate during maturation and finally the influence of sherry from these barrels - it is the sweetness that is associated with this and makes the brandy a favorite not only among connoisseurs! From our point of view, one of the most aroma-rich barrels for restocking with a profound finesse, a mouth caressing for the subsequent distillates and beers in the restocking.

Cognac barrel ca. 260 l
Freshly emptied cognac barrels ca 260 l Ideal barrel for aging many beers and distillates such as Korn, Whisky, Brandy but also fruit Brandies such as cherry, pear and many more. Nose: Powerful, round and fruity, hints of vanilla, cocoa, candied fruit and prune.  Barrel has been filled with cognac for about 20 years, the barrel is checked, revised if necessary and equipped with new barrel hoops. Cognac barrels or the "mother of all spirit barrels". One could say that the history of modern distillate barrels began with the cognac barrels in the 17th century! The distillers in the Charente, the area around the city of Cognac were looking for vessels to ship their distillates - the Cognac - overseas! At that time, it was natural to build these vessels in the form of a wooden barrel and from the wood of the region - the Limousin and the Tronҫais forest area. Especially with the wood from the Limousin - a region in southwestern France very fertile by the soils and thus location of large, mighty but also fast growing oaks one connects today the origin of the small maturity barrels. Wooden barrels made of Limousin oak, became synonymous for a while when talking about small barrique barrels made of French oak. For the aging of Cognac, even today, barrels of 300 to 350 liters are mostly used. This content ensures a balance between the internal surface and the maturation process due to the penetration of air from the outside. Approximately 1.5% shrinkage results from this maturation in the cognac barrels per year. The older the barrels become, the more saturated the wood is with brandy, the cognac! After emptying and a general overhaul, these premium cognac barrels are then actually even more valuable for further use as flavor carriers, e.g. in the maturation of fine craft beers, the finishing of whiskey or gin and all kinds of distillates that are to be refined with the maturation in cognac barrels. Alcohol preserves - even wood, to the extent that wooden barrels, which have matured for sometimes decades of great cognac qualities, have an almost endless life with good care. As is so often the case with these valuable Cognac wooden barrels, exceptional qualities have their price, are rare and by no means to be confused with barrels in which Brandy was stored in Spain - these are often made of American oak. Freshly emptied cognac or brandy barrels are particularly interesting for the addition of distillates. Whether it's a strong brandy with intense, bitter-sweet notes or a soft, fruity-sweet brandy - both aroma carriers bring more depth and structure to your distillate.

These high-quality wooden barrels are ideal as an underlining component or as a counterpart to find the right balance.
